Gene Lamar Monk's Obituary
Gene Lamar Monk fought a long 50+ days’ battle of illness with hope and determination before gaining his heavenly wings on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, with a huge circle of family love surrounding him in the ICU of Cabrini Hospital, Alexandria, LA.
Services will be held on Friday evening, September 21, 2018, at 5:00 pm at LaCamp Church of God, LaCamp, LA with Pastor Shawn Waggoner, officiating. Burial will be in the LaCamp Cemetery on the church property.
The family requests that visitation be observed on Thursday evening, September 20, from 4:00 to 9:00 pm and on Friday, from 8:00 am until time of service.
Gene, age 77, was the first-born to the union of Floyd and Dorothy (Causey) Monk, on June 20, 1941, at their home on the Merida Spurgeon Road in LaCamp, LA. Upon graduation from high school, Gene entered the U.S. Air Force and began a four-year journey that took him far from his roots, including a stint in Viet Nam. His AF Specialty was in photography, so Gene continued his creative nature through the lenses of his cameras. He also loved to paint, though he never really developed this giftedness. His post-AF job found him using his natural talents in the field of construction. Many area and family homes were built and bricked by his expertise---over 100 at last count.
Another interest in his later years was in gardening and peddling , not only the fresh produce he raised, but also those pickles, relishes, jams, and jellies that he liked to do. His family also benefitted from his hobby of making pecan pies and peanut brittle candy. He slowed down, only in recent years, due to having had a stroke.
He is preceded in death by his son, Quintin Lamont Monk; his parents, Floyd and Dorothy Monk; mother of his children, Isabella Geddes Monk; special friend, Barbara Gauthier; and step-son, Scotty Willis.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons: William Monk of Hattisburg, MS; Michael M. Monk (Paula) Alexandria, LA; Mason E. Monk (Chasity) of Poland, LA; his daughters, Melissa Olean Monk of Lafayette, LA, Melinda Rose Monk Blood (Gregg) of Pine Prairie, LA; brother: Douglas S. Monk of LaCamp; sisters: Viva M. Grant of Leander, Sharon Mock-Bailey of LaCamp and Naomi M Roy of LaCamp. his grandchildren: Michael A. Monk; Ryan Monk; Emily Monk; Alyssa Monk; Landyn Monk; Jared Johnson; Lauren Johnson; Isabel Sikes; Taylor McCaulley; Sydney McCaulley; his step-son, Ruston Monk; and mother of Mason and Ruston, Susie Willis Monk; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and family members.
