Don Austin Scoggins' Obituary
Graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at Leesville Cemetery with Bro. Craig Forque officiating.
Don, the son of F.P. Scoggins, Sr. and Tressie Keel Scoggins Hagan, was born on June 5, 1939, in Leesville, LA. He passed away on Friday, March 27, 2020 in Alexandria, LA.
Don was an extremely loving husband, father and grandfather. Being very family oriented, he never missed an opportunity to grill steaks with all the trimmings. The family’s favorite was gathering for “granddaddy’s steaks”.
Don had a deep love for Leesville and his country. He graduated from Leesville High School in 1957 and then from Northwestern State University where he served as a Black Knight in the ROTC program. Don married the absolute love of his life since junior high, Linda Elizabeth “Betsy” May, on January 26, 1962. He served in the United States Army, taught junior high science at Leesville, sold real estate for many years, and then owned Hernandez Farm Supply until his retirement.
Don was a member of First Baptist Church in Leesville for over 65 years and was also a faithful member of the Unity Sunday School class and “morning coffee crew”. He was a member of the Leesville Lions Club, where he was a past president and rodeo chairman. Don was a Master Mason belonging to Leesville Lodge #240 F&AM. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Shreveport Scottish Rite Bodies. Don was instrumental in establishing local volunteer fire stations throughout Vernon Parish and was always quick to volunteer for any veteran service organization.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, F. P Scoggins, Jr.; and wife of 54 years, Betsy Scoggins.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Elizabeth Scoggins and Linda “Dandy” Scoggins Beckermeyer and her husband Tony, both of Leesville; four beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth May Gautreaux Cyr and husband Timothy, Austin Clark Beckermeyer, Nathan Don Gautreaux, and Collin Wayne Beckermeyer; three nephews; and one niece.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Austin Clark Beckermeyer, Nathan Don Gautreaux, Collin Wayne Beckermeyer, and Timothy Cyr.
Honorary pallbearers are Linwood Pace, Danny Rowzee and LeRoy Jackson.
