Wanda Mayo Moore, just Dumpy to those who knew and loved her. She was the fifth born of a brood of eight, her parents Fred and Eva Mayo struggled to raise this loving family during the Great Depression. She was born and raised in the Leesville area and spent the remainder of her full life in a little slice of heaven, we all called Snuff Ridge, a suburb of Leesville! When she was born, she was very little and wasn’t expected to make it, but she was born with that never back down, never give up spirit, so she did make it, and she thrived. Since she was so small, her grandfather said she looked like a little dumpling, dumpling morphed into Dumpy, and that nickname stuck with her for a lifetime!
Dumpy met and married the love of her life, Charlie Moore, who just happened to be her brother, Frank Mayo’s best friend. After marriage, they moved to Lake Charles, LA. They had two boys, Bobby and Doug, and eventually moved back to Vernon Parish and settled down on Snuff Ridge.
Eventually she was known as The Mayor of the Ridge, everyone knew and loved her. If you needed a butt chewing, a butt whopping, an attitude adjustment, a big hug, or just a shoulder to lean on; she was the go to person! She always had time for you, no matter what you needed, and always had a hot cup of Seaport Dark Roast, that is if you were man enough to drink it! She was more than a mom and a wife, or a homemaker. She was a softball coach, with her sister Aliene, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, she was a Tupperware Dealer, a Stanley Home Products Dealer, and she was an elementary room mother. But she was just Dumpy, a good and steadfast friend and neighbor. As she tells it, she raised three boys, Doug, Bobby “Pee Wee”, and Charles, our precious daddy! When she lost her love, Charlie, most of her died with him, she grieved for him until her last days. Bobby often said she spoke to Charlie in her last days. She gained her wings on May the Fourth, we can just see the glorious reunion with her Love and with Jesus! We would bet money, she and Charlie are two steppin’ on golden streets!
By no means, is this goodbye, it’s a see you later when we meet again in the sky on that Glorious Morn!
