Velma Louise Cryer's Obituary
Velma Haney Cryer, 88, passed from this life on February 8, 2026. Born on August 27, 1937, to Lonas Haney and Jennie Jones Haney, Velma lived a life defined by determination, devotion to family, and a heart for serving others.
Velma was married to the love of her life, Daniel Cryer, for 39 cherished years until his passing. Together they built a home filled with faith, laughter, and the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals. She was a devoted mother to her son, Daniel Dae Cryer and wife Angel of Vidor, Texas, and her daughter, Dinah Nunley and husband Rickey of Magnolia, Texas.
She was a proud and adoring grandmother to Danielle Calcote, Aaron Cryer, Angelica Chuba, Christina Johnson, Destiney Masse, Daniel Cryer II, Bryan Nunley, and Eric Nunley. Her legacy continues through 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved great-grandson, Bryce Nunley.
Velma was also preceded in death by her husband, Arlice Daniel Cryer; her brothers, Lonzy Haney and Roy Haney; and her sister, Virgie Hackworth. She is survived by her sisters, Shirley Cofer of Oakridge, TN and Susan Foust of Clinton, TN.
Velma was known for her generous spirit and servant’s heart. She loved taking care of people and was happiest when her home was full. She adored her grandchildren and expressed her love through cooking, baking, and making sure no one ever left her table hungry. An excellent gardener, she enjoyed tending her plants and canning the fruits of her labor. She also loved crocheting, quilting, and was an avid reader.
A faithful member of Diamond Baptist Church, Velma volunteered often and was affectionately known as one of the “cookie ladies” during Vacation Bible School — a role she embraced with joy. Her hospitality and warm smile left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Visitation will be held on February 15, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder, Louisiana. Funeral services will take place on February 16, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Diamond Baptist Church with Bro. Bill Smith officiating. A burial will follow at Rosepine Cemetery. Services are under the care of Labby Memorial Funeral Home, DeRidder.
Those honored to be pallbearers will be Bryan Nunley, Eric Nunley, Aaron Cryer, Daniel Cryer, Logan Calcote, and Bryan Cofer.
Velma’s life was a beautiful example of faith in action, love without limits, and strength wrapped in kindness. She will be deeply missed and forever treasured by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
