Travis Mitchell Jackson's Obituary
Travis Mitchell Jackson was born July 14, 1932, in Double Springs, AL, to Nathanial Jackson and Martha Hankins Jackson. On June 28, 2011, surrounded by those he loved, Travis entered the gates of Heaven to be with his Heavenly Father. Travis retired from the United States Army in 1974, with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was deployed overseas five times, serving in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Army, he worked civil service at Camp Beauregard and Fort Polk, retiring from both. Travis was a locksmith for Fort Polk until a back injury sidelined him four years ago. He was an avid farmer and was well known for his peas and watermelons.
His watermelon growing skills were featured on John Bridges and KPLC’s “Louisiana Traveler”.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 10:00 A.M. at Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder with Brother Byron Williams and Josh McDaniel officiating. Interment will follow in Sugartown Cemetery, Sugartown, LA. Visitation will be held Friday, July 1, 2011, from 10 A.M. until 9 P.M. at the funeral home.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Rubie Lee Smith Jackson. Travis leaves behind to cherish his wonderful memory and to celebrate his life;
2 sons, Billy Henry of Mittie, LA and Wayne Jackson and wife Ann of Sugartown, LA; 4 daughters, Cassandra Ware of Sugartown, LA, Gail James and husband C.W. of Pitkin, LA, Melissia Forsythe and husband David of Tahlequah, OK, Nina McDaniel of Merryville; 15 grandchildren, Lee Hester of DeRidder, LA, Billy Henry, Jr. of Mittie, LA, Mark James and wife Karen of DeRidder, LA, Brandie Smith of Plano, TX, Bridgette Henry of Dry Creek, LA, Trent James and wife Sydney of Rosepine, LA, Alisha Jackson and fiancé Blaine of Ville Platte, LA, Curtis Jackson and wife Brandie of Moss Bluff, LA, Travis D. Jackson and wife Bobbie of Rosepine, LA, Josh McDaniel and wife Amanda of Downsville, LA, Aaron Perkins and wife Ashley of Manchester, MO, Brittany Henry of Mitte, LA, Britta Henry of Mittie, LA, Samuel Jackson and fiancé Bethany of Sugartown, LA and Kristen McDaniel of Merryville, LA; 24 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Mary Rowlin of Farmington, MO; 2 nephews, James Colburn and wife Sue of Texas and Roy Colburn and wife Carolyn of TN.
