Susanne F. Chamblee's Obituary
Funeral services for Susanne Fredrika Erickson Chamblee, 92, of Many will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at 11 am at Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Leesville, with Rev Sean Cho officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Anacoco Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 30th, from 10 am until service time in the funeral home.
On May 9, 1925, Susanne Fredericka Erickson, the daughter of Eric Leroy and Velma Fondren Erickson, was born in the booming sawmill community of Fisher, LA in Sabine Parish. Although her parents were living in Baton Rouge at the time, Susanne’s mother decided to travel to Sabine Parish to be with her mother during the birth of her daughter.
Susanne grew up in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Although an only child, she was later joined by an adopted brother, William Murphy Erickson. Susanna was afforded every opportunity and attended the University of Alabama after high school graduation. Later, she married the love of her life, Maurice Chamblee. They married on August 3, 1948, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Mr Chamblee was the author fo the book, Checker and the Experts: featuring the Tinsley vs Chamblee match Games for the U. S. Junior Title (1949). He also placed 1st in the Masters Division of the 1950 American checker Federation’s 3-move National Tournament in Paxton, Illinois. Before the untimely death of Mr. Chamblee on February 18, 1958, twin boys were born to Susanne and Maurice, John Frederick and Edmund Roscoe.
When the twins were young, the family moved to Washington D.C., to live with her parents. Susanne’s father worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Susanne also has a long career in Washington. She worked for the Surgeon General, the Department of Housing, the Navy and the Coast Guard. She ended her career in service to the Pentagon. Sue, in her spare time, played the piano and was active in several clubs and organizations. When her sons began high school, she and her family made the decision to move to Shreveport to retire.
Susanne was preceded in death by her husband, brother and her parents. Shortly before her death, she returned to Sabine Parish and has been living with her sons in the Sabine Retirement Center, It is with deep gratitude that we have those employees who filled her last years with their love and support.
She is survived by her sons, John and Edmund Chamblee of Many, LA; cousins, Adonna Elliott and Twanda Willrodt.
