Sherrod Monette Jones' Obituary
Sherrod Monette Jones, 88, passed away at 4:03 am, Sunday, November 3, 2007, in the Westwood Manor Nursing Home in DeRidder.
He was born in Longville, Louisiana and his family moved to DeRidder in 1935, where he was a resident until his death.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Monette and Lilla Hartzog Jones, and his loving wife of 61 years, Lolita Jones. He Graduated from DeRidder High School and attended Southwest Louisiana Institute (USL). His parents were pioneer residence of Beauregard Parish and he grew up on his father's sheep ranch. Their sheep ranch was one of the largest in the state at one time having a flock of over 3,000 sheep. It was fascinating to hear him tell stories of the early sheep roundups. He often said you could ride from Kinder, LA to Texas without crossing a fence.
He was a WWII Veteran in the Army Air Corps. Enlisting in September, 1940 he served until October, 1945. He served three years in the Pacific Theater as a radar operator and technician.
He began working for Crosby Chemicals in DeRidder in 1946 where he was an extractor operator and chemist and later for Westvaco, Inc., where he retired in 1984.
His two great passions in life were traveling and trains. He visited all fifty states and there was nothing he didn't know about steam and diesel locomotives.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 27 and the Veterans of Foriegn Wars Post 3619, both in DeRidder. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Chruch in DeRidder.
He is survivied by two neices, Lynette Poe Jordon of Huntington Park, Maryland and Sandra Poe Dunn of Coconut Beach, Florida, One Nephew, Charles Poe of DeRidder, Louisiana.
His Funeral wll be held at 2 PM, Tuesday, November 6, 2006 in the First United Methodist Church in DeRidder, with Rev. Mike McLaurin officating. Burial will follow in Beauregard Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM until service time in the church Tuesday, November 6th.
The family has requested donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in DeRidder, LA.
