Ruth J. Fisher, a long time resident of Leesville, Louisiana passed from this life on March 8, 2008. Mrs. Fisher was born April 29, 1912 to Obadiah and Mittie Johnson in Robeline, Louisiana and was the oldest of seven children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, N. L. Fisher, who passed away in 1974, and her eldest daughter, Frances, in 1993. Mrs. Fisher, who was a dedicated wife and mother of four, was also known as a very effective and influential educator who taught school for over 35 years. She was recognized as a caring teacher, committed to bringing out the very best in each student, and a teacher with a desire to have a positive influence on each student’s life for years to come. Her teaching philosophy centered on getting each child to want to learn, to do their very best at all times and to simply enjoy school. She believed that the learning experience was a key cornerstone necessary to properly prepare young people for the future; that it should be exciting and fun; and that learning and educating continue for a lifetime.
Mrs. Fisher was also a very avid reader and found relaxation in sitting down with a good book each evening and enjoying several chapters before going to bed. She also loved the challenge of solving crossword puzzles that were in the Shreveport Times and solved the vast majority of those puzzles, while having her morning coffee. She continued this daily ritual up until just a few years ago, and as she put it “it keeps my mind sharp and is an avenue for me to continue to learn”. Teaching was a major part of her life and carried over to her involvement at the First Baptist Church of Leesville, where she was an active member and a Sunday school teacher for many years. Mrs. Fisher was also known for her story telling and oratory abilities, not only at church, but at many community functions, which were an inspiration to her listeners.
Mrs. Fisher is survived by her children, Ruth Weitz and husband, Alan of Delray Beach, Florida; Ken Fisher and wife, Sandra of Southlake, Texas; and Keith Fisher and wife, Sherri of Zachary, Louisiana; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three sisters, Polly Murray and husband Joe, of Shreveport, Louisiana, Vergie Rambin and husband, Andrew of Sherman, Texas and Cleo Johnson of Leesville, who was always there to be with her, both as a sister and best friend, each and every day. Mrs. Fisher also leaves behind fond memories, numerous learned lessons of life and many, many friends.
