Roger A. "Nick" Nickerson's Obituary
Funeral services for Roger A. “Nick” Nickerson Sr.,91, of Leesville, LA will be held Sunday, January 17, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in Labby Memorial Funeral Home with Bro. Gil Arthur officiating. Burial will follow in the Leesville Cemetery in Leesville. Visitation will be Saturday, January 16th from 4:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home and on Sunday from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of the Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville.
Mr. Nickerson, the son of Chester and Bertha Thomas Nickerson was born August 21, 1918 in Chelsea, MA. He passed away on January 13, 2010 at the Woodlands Healthcare Center in Leesville, LA.
He served in the Army during WWII. He was stationed at Ft. Polk then deployed to England, France, and Germany driving tanks. He played the trumpet in the unit band that played at the USO’s for the entertainment of other troops. After the war he returned to Leesville and his bride, Ollie Sue McElveen Nickerson. He worked in Leesville, Shreveport, and Lake Charles for the US Post Office, was a donut shop owner, and an electrician. He eventually retired from Ft. Polk as an electrician. He loved to bowl and was recently recognized by La. Lanes as the oldest league bowler. He loved to travel and spend time in Florida. He enjoyed being with family and watching the grandchildren grow and participate in various sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Bertha Nickerson, spouse Ollie Sue Nickerson, son Roger Allan Nickerson, Jr., brother Melvin Nickerson, and sister Viola Newton.
He is survived by two daughters; Jane Beltz and husband John of Leesville, Marci Nickerson of Houston, TX; one daughter-in-law, Linda Nickerson of Lake Charles, La.; five Grandchildren, Debra Partridge and husband Robert of Anacoco, LA, Brenda Richardson and husband Steven of Ft. Carson, CO, Allinda Sue Nickerson of Lake Charles, LA, Rebecca Majors and husband Jimmy of Pt. Neches, TX, and Meloni Hartley and husband Richard of Grand Junction, CO; fifteen great-grandchildren, Casey, Jared and Austen Partridge, Mason and Madison Paddy, Macayla and Keeley Richardson, Braxton Nickerson, Justin, Matthew, and Jamie Majors; and Megan, Hannah, Trey, and Michele Hartley.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to East Leesville Baptist Church Building Fund.
