Richard Thompson's Obituary
Richard T. Thompson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024, in Rosepine, Louisiana. Born on April 3, 1947, in Rosepine to Dallas Owen and Vivian Lee Lewis Thompson, Richard lived a life marked by love for his family and dedication to his country.
A proud veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, Richard served with honor and distinction as a military policeman at the age of 19. His bravery earned him numerous accolades including the Bronze Star with Valor—a testament to his courage under fire. After returning home from service, he continued to serve his community as an investigator for state forestry where he was known for his integrity and commitment.
Richard shared a beautiful marriage of 58 years with Bonnie Thompson. Their bond was one built on mutual respect and unwavering support; together they created a loving home filled with laughter and warmth. He is survived by their daughter Shelly Pitts and her husband David of DeRidder; brothers Lewis (Evelyn), Tommy (Bobbie), Lynn (Lynn) all of Rosepine; sister Belinda Harris of Eugene Oregon; six grandchildren—Craig Wilkins, Jamie Wilkins, Taylor Zagone, Sophia Pitts, Ryan Thompson, and Alaina Thompson—and four step-grandchildren: Will Pitts, Ian Pitts, Spencer Pitts, and Nicki Pitts Yurchison along with seven great-grandchildren: Hadley, Dallas, Carter, Wren, Phillip, Allie, and Crews.
Family meant everything to Richard. He cherished every moment spent fishing or hunting alongside loved ones or simply enjoying evenings watching Fox News at full volume—his way of staying connected to the world around him while sharing those moments with Bonnie by his side. An artist at heart who found joy in painting as well as carpentry projects like building birdhouses that brought smiles not only to himself but also those around him.
He was preceded in death by parents Dallas Owen & Vivian Lee Lewis Thompson; son Phillip Ryan Thompson; brothers Ronnie & Brent Thompson—all whom he missed dearly throughout life’s journey.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 5 PM until 8 PM followed again Saturday morning from 9 AM until time of service at 10AM at Labby Chapel in DeRidder La., officiated by Rev.
