Oscar Michael Dunn Jr.'s Obituary
Oscar Michael Dunn, Jr. was born September 13, 1954 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Oscar Dunn, Sr. and the late Gloria Mckenna Dunn. He died suddenly on May 22, 2022 at the age of 67.
Oscar began his education in New Orleans at Valena C. Jones Elementary School, Rivers Frederick Jr. High School and McDonogh #35 High School, graduating in 1972. Immediately after graduation, he began his long career in the United States Army, beginning with a short engagement from 1972 to 1975. Shortly after being honorably discharged, Oscar moved to Los Angeles, California where he attended L.A. Valley Community College, earning an associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy and worked at a few sales and marketing jobs, but found himself missing the structure, discipline, and camaraderie of military life. In 1989 he re-enlisted and found his passion when he served as a military police officer, most of that time in Germany, from 1989 to 2006, leading to his career as a school resource officer in civilian life.
During his lengthy military career, he fought in Vietnam and various engagements in the Persian Gulf, earning him the Bronze Service Star. He received numerous commendations and medals while serving his country and had the wonderful opportunity to travel all over Europe. Oscar’s last duty station was at Fort Polk in Leesville, Louisiana. After a total of 20 years of service he retired from the army, reaching the rank of staff sergeant.
Oscar’s civilian life began when he enrolled in the Police Academy in Alexandria, Louisiana in 2007. After 13 weeks of rigorous training, he joined the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department as a school resource officer at Hornbeck High School in Hornbeck, Louisiana. He enjoyed serving his community in this capacity and made many lasting friendships.
He was a dog lover and an avid New Orleans Saints fan. He enjoyed hanging with his veteran friends, meeting often for breakfast at the local coffee shop, reliving and sharing stories from their years of military service. He also enjoyed collecting jewelry and driving his BMW.
Oscar leaves behind, two sisters, Pamella Dunn Lee (Wayne, Sr.) and Kathleen Dunn Sylvester (Harold, Jr.) who cherish his memory, his sister-in-law, Carol Brooks Dunn (Ricky, Sr.) and his “adopted” granddaughter Hailee (“Mousie”) Weathers, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He will be remembered as a kind and loving brother, uncle and Paw.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father and his younger brother Ricky Dunn, Sr.
