Norris Henry Smith's Obituary
Funeral services for Norris Henry Smith, 102, of Evans will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at 11 am at Evans Congregational Methodist in Evans, with Rev. Todd Eagan officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, from 5 pm until time of service Wednesday, August 24th at the church.
Norris, the son of Rufus Henry and Bena Keller Smith was born on April 15, 1914, in Evans, Louisiana. He passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2016, in Evans, Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vertie Mae Smith; daughter, Cornella Shaw; grandson, Andre’ Domingue and great grandsons, Brenden Connally and Carson Willis.
A lifelong resident of Evans; he passed away about 1 ½ miles from where he was born. Mr. Smith was a carpenter and assisted in building Camp Polk. During World War II, Norris worked as a tank mechanic at Camp Polk and later learned the tanks he worked on were used during the D-Day Invasion. He owned and operated Evans Mercantile. He served as a Police Juryman for Ward 3 and was a former President of the jury. He was an avid reader and was extremely independent. Norris was a valued member of the Evans community. To put it simply “He Was A Good Man.”
Mr. Smith is survived by his daughters, Lucille & David Domingue of Evans and Mildred Belton of Arlington, TX; sister, Blanche Reynolds of Houma; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren
