Mitchell Floyd Toney's Obituary
Funeral services for Mitchell Floyd Toney, 86, of Rosepine, Louisiana will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 23, 2012, at Labby Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Michael C. Spiess officiating. Burial will follow in the Castor Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., Wednesday, August 22nd, and on Thursday, August 23rd, from 9:00 am until service time at the funeral home.
Mr. Toney was born May 26, 1926, and passed away on August 21, 2012, at his residence in Rosepine. He was born in East Texas and moved with his family to Vernon Parish as a child and resided here the remainder of his life. He experienced the Great Depression and, as a young teenager, helped support his family working as a farmer, truck driver, and various other jobs. He was a local businessman, operating several businesses in and around Leesville. He loved fishing and was an avid gardener with a ‘magical green thumb’ and loved planting vegetable gardens, watching them grow, and then providing fresh vegetables to many friends and families. His greatest principle in life was “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Mitchell Toney and Bertha Willis Toney; his sisters, Dorothy Burr, Willie Minter, Donna Clements, and his brothers, James O. Toney and Robert R. Toney.
He is survived by his sisters, Vira Toney LaFleur of Lake Charles, Norma Toney Watson of Theodore, Alabama, and his brothers, Charles Toney of Westlake and Tommy Toney of Leesville.
He is also survived by son Roger Z. Toney and wife Sharon and grandchildren Kimberly Coodie and husband Bruce; Matthew Toney and wife Vanessa; Sara Dugger and husband Adam all of Ball, LA; daughter, Cyndee Warren and husband Jerry of Pineville and grandchildren Michial Gregg of Alexandria; Rebeka Wilson and husband, Danny of Alexandria; and Christopher Warren of Pineville, LA; daughter Cheryl Spiess and husband Michael and grandchildren Melissa Kerns and husband Ronald; Dr. Christopher Spiess and wife Adria, all of West Virginia; son Robert M. Toney of Rosepine; and daughter, Phyllis “Lynne” Toney-Halstead and husband Roy, of Rosepine and grandchildren Shaunda Beasley of Pittsburgh, PA and Jennifer Bruce and husband, Sidney of Lumberton, TX, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Also, heartfelt thanks to former wife and mother of their five children, Lydia Young Willis and Ms. Rena Buxton and children, Holly, Jordan and Gabe for their care, concern and support.
