Mavis Jones Fitzenreiter, 94, of Hornbeck, LA passed peacefully from this life surrounded by her children on the morning of May 17, 2022, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Mavis was born in Hornbeck, LA on April 6, 1928, to Imon and Verna Jones. Mavis worked for Western Union and traveled to locations in San Francisco and Chicago, helping to organize Western Union stores as they opened for business. She worked in Leesville and in Lake Charles, where she met Walter “Leo” Fitzenreiter through a mutual acquaintance. In 1953 she married Leo, the love of her life, and together they raised four children: Valerie Fitzenreiter of Hornbeck, Robert Fitzenreiter (Sarah) of DeQuincy, James “Jim” Fitzenreiter of Many, and Laura (Anthony) LeDoux of Sulphur, LA. Mavis sang in church choirs, was a substitute teacher, and helped with clubs and organizations for which her children were members. She was a seamstress, loved to can vegetables, and create floral arrangements for her church, The Hornbeck United Methodist Church. She was a member of the O.W.W. (Over-worked Wives) organization which met for over 50 years. Mavis was passionate about family reunions, documenting photographs for generations to come, preserving the Self Cemetery located in Hodges Gardens, and cherishing her time with friends and family.
In addition to her children, those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Enid Brown of Ringgold, LA, grandchildren Jillian Fitzenreiter, Laurie Chancey, Amanda Dinger, Garren Fitzenreiter, Denis LeDoux, and Andrew LeDoux; great grandchildren Kian Bonin, Aubrey Bonin, Paisley Bonin, McKenna Bonin, Seth Dinger and Lily Dinger, along with several grandcats.
Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Fitzenreiter, her parents, Verna and Imon Jones, five brothers: Lambert Jones, Harold Jones, Henry “Dick” Jones, Jesse “Red” Jones, and Thomas “Tom” Jones, and one sister, “Cleo” Jones.
The family offers their sincere appreciation to Kindred Home Health and Hospice of Leesville, to Dr. Kimberly Landrum and to all family and friends for your visits, phone calls, emails, and texts.
