Mary Virginia Self Pollock's Obituary
Mary Virginia “Ginger” Pollock of Anacoco, LA was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world for her Heavenly home on September 1, 2021 at the age of 85.
She was born to David and Rachel (Thornton) Self on May 28, 1936 in Fullerton, LA, while her father was working at the Fullerton sawmill. While she was still very young, her family moved to Rayville, in Richland Parish to begin cotton farming. Many times, she has told stories of leaving milk in the running brook near the house to keep it cool, as well as her fear of gathering eggs because she was scared of the hen. After graduating from Holly Ridge High School, she became a telephone switchboard operator for BellSouth in Bastrop, LA. When she met the love of her life, Troy, she gave up the job she enjoyed and became an extraordinary homemaker and Army wife. Six months after their marriage on August 29, 1961, Troy was reassigned for a tour in Germany, and she followed alone to meet him; their family began while they were overseas. They completed another tour in Germany together following a brief assignment in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She loved her travels in Germany. Nearing retirement, they moved to Anacoco. After her children were grown, she returned to a career and retired from the Vernon Parish School Board as an elementary school cafeteria worker. Pentecostal by faith, she prayed continuously for her family, and made sure her family knew she expected them to attend church and worship God.
Ginger, or “Meemaw” as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren and others, loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for others. Her love language was caring for others and she demonstrated that by cooking. If you have ever tasted any of her creations – whether it was biscuits and gravy; roast beef; Mexican casserole; peas and cornbread; and most especially – her famous peanut butter cake (with both cake and frosting made from scratch!) – you would anxiously await your next meal. Her favorite times were when she was surrounded by her children and their children – especially those great-grandbabies. She certainly found excuses to allow them to do many things her children would never have gotten away with! She also enjoyed hearing her children sing together, reading her Bible and working her puzzle books.
