Mary Lillian Powell Hughes' Obituary
Mary Lillian Powell Hughes was born in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on September 18, 1928 to Emmett and Lillian Gregory Powell. She passed away March 16, 2026 at The Oaks of Louisiana in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Mary was a retired school teacher from Leesville Junior High School in Leesville, Louisiana. She was a long-time member of the Leesville Community. She was a committed member of First Baptist Church of Leesville where she taught first grade Sunday School, member of the choir and member of the DMA club (Don't mention age)
She was a devoted wife and mother and beloved grandmother and great grandmother who loved hearing about all of their accomplishments. Mary enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening, and cooking and taking care of her home.
Mary graduated from Pleasant Hill High School, Pleasant Hill Louisiana, and she attended
Centenary College and graduated from Northwestern State University with a B.A. in Business and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband C.A. Hughes, brother Emmett Powell, Jr., and sister Carolyn Elizabeth Powell Bell.
She is survived by her son Ken Hughes (Sheri), daughter Mary Carolyn Hughes Hersey (Ralph), four grandchildren, Kenneth Hughes, Andrew Hughes, Mary Elizabeth Hersey Gallegos, and Ross Hersey. There are five great grandchildren, Cooper Hughes, James Gallegos, Joseph Gallegos, Maggie Hughes and Charlie Hughes.
Pallbearers will be: Jimmy Cruse, Christopher Gallegos, Ross Hersey, Andrew Hughes, Cooper Hughes and Kenneth Hughes.
Services will be held Monday March 23rd at First Baptist Church, Leesville, Louisiana. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. with funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m. and burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Leesville.
