Mary was born on Tuesday, January 25, 1938, to Ethel Laird Baggett and Joseph Baggett at Longville, LA. Mary had a 7th grade education but would be called an “Entrepreneur” today. She opened her own beauty shop after graduating from beauty school in her 20’s. She enjoyed experimenting with new styles on her daughter Debbie and later on her granddaughters. Mary worked for a time at Fort Polk in the hospital as a nursing assistant and during the Viet Nam War in processing soldiers in and out. It always saddened her at the many young men she processed out to go to war. She became a dress designer working out of her home and expanded that endeavor to designing dolls and various crafts. Mary enjoyed sewing and using her artistic abilities to enrich her family’s lives. She owned several small businesses over the years including Maw-Maw’s Flea Market, Link’s upholstery, Long Branch Saloon, Beer Mug and co-owned Link’s Trailer Park. But her world was her family. She was at every ball game, pageant and event she could attend helping to get grandchildren from one end of the parish to another and cheering them on the whole way. There was never anyone as “great” as her babies and she wouldn’t mind telling you so. Mary was an active member of the DeRidder Al-Anon for many years. She sponsored many family members whose lives had been affected by alcoholism. She was one tough cookie with a heart of gold. Mary spent the last few months at home. Her longtime friend, Margie Vest, was a constant companion and helped to fill her days full of love and care.
Mary passed away at home surrounded by the family she loved. She will be greatly missed.
