Lucy Erickson Firesheets' Obituary
Funeral services for Lucy Erickson Firesheets, 91, of Leesville will be held Saturday, July 16, 2016, at 10 am at the Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Leesville, with Rev. Robbyn Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Grove Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.
Visitation will be Friday, July 15, 2016, from 5 pm until 9 pm at the funeral home.
Thelma Lucille Early, AKA: Miss Lucy, was born on January 2, 1925 to John W. and Elizabeth Alstott Early in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 in Deridder at the age of 91 with her family by her side.
Miss Lucy grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where she began her nursing career that spanned several decades. Involved in many volunteer and civic organizations, Miss Lucy was honored for 20 years of service to the American Red Cross; was a devoted member of the NCO Wives Club; was responsible for starting health education courses in the Vernon Parish Schools; instrumental for securing a Red Cross First Aide Station at the West Louisiana Forestry Festival; taught first aid, CPR and emergency care courses for all Vernon Parish Law Enforcement agencies; started the nursing services for persons incarcerated in the Vernon Parish Jail; worked as Camp Nurse for the LEEP program and Louisiana Lions Crippled Children’s Camp and worked with the Commodity Distribution Program. She was a member of the Orange Chapter 224, Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Unit 145 Auxiliary, VFW Post 3106 Auxiliary, West Central Shrine Club of Louisiana, and Holly Grove United Methodist Church. In 1990, Miss Lucy was awarded the Outstanding Citizen of the year award and was Grand Marshal of the Leesville Lions club Rodeo Parade. In her spare time, she gave countless “shots” and rendered first aide to the community. In her later years, Miss Lucy achieved status as Aquatics Instructor for the West Louisiana Physical Therapy Center, which brought her much joy helping others with pool therapy.
Never meeting a stranger, Miss Lucy’s life-long mission was to comfort, help and make people laugh. Miss Lucy repeated many times, “I love doing for people and my motto is: ‘It matters so much to be cared for’….and I care.” Miss Lucy has touched many lives thru her nursing and volunteer work and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Miss Lucy is preceded in death by husbands, Clarence Oldham, Carl Erickson and Glen Firesheets. She is survived by daughter Carla and husband Ronald Moore and granddaughter, Colette Moore of Anacoco and fiancée, Travis McDonald and grandson Brandon and Leslie Moore of Leesville and great-grandchildren, Cade, Canaan, and Jasper.
Mrs. Firesheets’ family extends their gratitude and appreciation to Genevia Johnson, Sylvia Hedrick and the staff members of Beauregard Memorial Hospital, Byrd Regional Hospital and The Woodlands Healthcare Center for their tireless effort to care for Miss Lucy.
