Kathleen "Kat" Fisher King's Obituary
Kathleen “Kat” Fisher King, 88, died December 13, 2012, at Christus St. Patrick Hospital of Lake Charles, LA. Kat was born February 18, 1924, in Beaumont, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar “Ed” George King, Sr., and two brothers, (Edward and JB) and a sister (Jean). Kat’s parents, Edna (Goodman) and Isaac Fisher were lifelong residents of Lake Charles in the community of Fisherville.
Kat and Ed were married December 13, 1941. They had a lifelong love affair of 66 years. They had three children: Edgar George King Jr. and wife Suzanne,
Greenville, MS; Pamela King Evans and husband Jerry, DeRidder, LA; and Michael Gene King and wife Deborah, Dry Creek, LA.
Kat and Ed intended to marry on her 18th birthday, but the U.S. entry into WWII following the bombing of Pearl Harbor forced them to move up the date. Shortly after marriage, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Kat followed Ed to San Diego, CA, for
training and, eventually, to Corpus Christi, TX, where Ed was stationed as a U.S. Navy Medic before embarking to the Pacific Island Theatre. Following Ed’s
return from overseas in 1945, they lived in Lake Charles until, at Kat's urging, the family moved to Dry Creek in 1953, where they established a dairy. Kat was
known to drive the hay truck during those early years of establishing the dairy, and when Ed had an appendectomy, she milked the cows. Michael continued the dairy until 1991. In 1958 Kat was selected as the Postmaster for the Dry Creek
U.S. Post Office, which was located in Ryan's Grocery Store--a community meeting place. Kat exercised her passion for traveling, following retirement in 1986, and she and Ed toured, via motor home, the U.S. and Canada for 15 years, especially
enjoying their time as "Winter Texans" each year in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
Kat and Ed were the proud grandparents of nine grandchildren and great-grand parents of 18 great grandchildren. Kat was referred to as Aunt Kitty by nieces and nephews. Family was everything to her, and nothing made her happier than to have them all around
her, particularly at Christmas. She was well known for her great South Louisiana cooking and baking, loving to use her talents in feeding any and all
who walked through her doors. Her greatest pleasure was enjoying others as they enjoyed her good cooking.
Kat and Ed joined the Dry Creek Baptist Church in 1953 and continued as members until their death. The Church was an integral part of their lives and the life of their family. As the Church grew and relocated to another site and new building, they served as teachers, officers, song leader, and deacon. Through their lives;
the lives of their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren; love of church and
community; all left lasting impressions.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012, 11:30:00 AM at Dry Creek Baptist Church, Dry Creek, LA. Ministers officiating will be Bro. Charlie Bailey and Bro. Ken Farmer, with the burial at Dry Creek Cemetery.
Her visitation will begin on Friday, December 14, 2012, 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder, LA.
