June LaVerne Shade Coney was the loving daughter of James H. Shade, Sr. and Julia Marguerite
Mills Shade. She was born in Wiergate, Texas on February 10, 1940.
After graduating from Grambling State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical
Education, she moved to Houston, Texas with her husband, Theddis (“T.R.” Coney). She was a
faithful member of New Life Temple Church under the leadership of Pastor Joe and Brenda K.
Perry while living in Houston. She was a faithful member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church,
under the leadership of Pastor Joseph L. Garner. She was a member of the Adult Women
Number 6 Sunday School Class, a faithful attendant of Bible Study, and Prayer Meeting.
While in Houston, she taught at Thomas Middle School for many years. In 1999, she returned
home to Leesville, Louisiana and began teaching in the Vernon Parish School System as an
English teacher at Leesville High School. She was a chaperone for various sporting events:
football, basketball, volleyball, track, and cheerleading. Mrs. Coney was the Wampus Cats’ most
“spirited” fan. Because of her support of the athletic department, she was recognized with
numerous awards. Due to her ability to connect with students, she was asked to teach at the
Leesville Optional School, working with students to improve their behavior.
Sister Coney never met a stranger and was a witness for God wherever she went. She always had
a positive word for everyone she came in contact with. She was affectionately known to many as
“Mama Coney.” She was a prayer warrior for many people and used her prayer “war room” to
intercede on others’ behalf.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Theddis (“T.R.”) and sons, Joske, Jamie, and Justin.
She leaves to cherish her memory, son Jamarcus (Daphne) Coney of Missouri City, TX; daughter
Julia Coney (Donald) Walters of Hyattsville, MD; brother Gene (Linda) Shade of Nashville, TN;
sisters Othella Anderson of Houston, TX; Gloria (Thurman) Prescott of Durham, N.C.; and
Parthenia Douglas-Beal of Leesville, LA; seventeen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren,
and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, teachers, and students. Her loving demeanor and
love of God, family, and community will always remain within our hearts.
