Graveside services for John William Poyner, 60, of Leesville, Louisiana will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014, at the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Leesville, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.
John the son of John Henry and LaVerne A. Groth Poyner was born February 27, 1938, in Chicago, IL. He passed away Monday, May 19, 2014, in Leesville.
Mr. Poyner retired from the United States Army as SSG- E6. He was a member of VFW Post 3106 and member of the Retired American Legion Post 387 in New Llano. He loved working his land and enjoyed being outdoors. He was very concerned about keeping his deceased friends graves cared for. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Poyner; brother, Joseph Poyner, sister, Barbara Jean “Penny” Poyner and grandson Patrick Ryan Rowe.
He is survived by sons, Thomas Gaskins & wife, Tommie Lynn of Anacoco & Samuel Poyner of Leesville; daughters, Barbara Baillie & husband, Richard Scott of Anacoco, Johnna Steinhorst of New Llano, Debra Ann Sutliff & husband, William of Plaucheville, LA & Colleen Waikel & husband, Heath of Mascoutah, IL; brothers, Robert Frank Poyner of McHenry, IL, Michael Poyner, Bloomington, IL and Richard Poyner of Masa, AZ; sister, Pamela Foster of McHenry, IL; 15 grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
