James Leary Dunlap's Obituary
James Leary Dunlap, 84, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026. He was born on March 28, 1942, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to the late Richard Dunlap and Betty Jane Leary Dunlap.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army for 21 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC). His military service reflected the values that guided his life—honor, dedication, integrity, and an unwavering love for his country. A true patriot, he was proud to have served and deeply appreciated the freedoms he helped protect.
Following his military career, James continued to live with the same strong work ethic that had defined him throughout his life. He was a hardworking man who believed in providing for his family and leading by example. Above all else, he was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished great-grandfather. His family was the center of his world, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with them.
James had a passion for golf carts and enjoyed spending time outdoors. Whether he was taking a ride, working on a project, or simply enjoying nature, he found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He especially adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and delighted in spoiling them whenever he could. His love, generosity, and sense of humor created countless memories that his family will cherish forever.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 56 years, Helen Dunlap; his daughters, Carol Campbell and husband, Jeffrey, of Cravens, Louisiana; Jaimie Smith and husband, Tom, of DeRidder, Louisiana; and Susan Liles of Longville, Louisiana; his grandchildren, Johnny Garcia and wife, Paige; Laken Brister and husband, D.J.; Valarie Dean and husband, Tyler; Kaitlyn Smith and fiancé, Nick; Thomas Smith and fiancé, Hannah; Samantha Liles; Dustin Liles; and Garrett Liles; and his 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Dunlap and Betty Jane Leary Dunlap, and his beloved sister, Jackie Kennedy.
James will be remembered for his unwavering patriotism, strong work ethic, love of the outdoors, and, most importantly, his deep devotion to his family. His legacy of service, love, and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
The family finds comfort in knowing that while James’s earthly journey has ended, the memories he created, the values he instilled, and the love he shared will remain forever in their hearts.
