Gregory Fred Mayo's Obituary
“Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who
love with heart and soul, there is no separation.” Rumi
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, Gregg
Mayo, today. After being diagnosed with acute leukemia and liver cancer this
summer, he left the Oschner Clinic in New Orleans, confidant that he would and
could surpass the two to six week life expectancy given to him by his doctors.
With the heart of a warrior and the spirit of a lamb, Gregg lived another 4 1/2
months.
Born in Houston, Texas on November 27, 1959, Greg was preceded in death by
his mother and father, Virginia and Frank Mayo of Vernon Parish. A resident of
Vernon Parish, he is survived by his three siblings Rickie Mayo of Alexandria, LA,
Karen Mayo-Dean of Los Angeles, CA and Gina Mayo of Leesville, LA; five
nieces and nephews, 11 great nieces and nephews and one great-great niece.
He grew up in Poche Bridge, LA and graduated from Cecilia High School as a
celebrated athlete and member of the Cecilia High School honor band. He
served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a commercial painter in the real estate
business.
As a drummer, Gregg played in a variety of bands in the Leesville area. He loved
to fish and in the essence of his upbringing in Cajun country, more than anything
he loved to ‘Pass a good time.” His infectious laughter and heart of gold will be
missed by all those who loved him.
Special thanks to our cousin, Bob Mayo, who lovingly opened his home to Gregg
in his greatest hour of need; his former wife, Angie Walker Trezil for her love and
companionship throughout his illness; the nursing staff at Hospice of Leesville
and Lake Charles and all of our family who found the time to visit with Gregg over
the last four months. His love for his family and friends was the fuel to his
extended survival and he was eternally grateful to everyone who made the time
to visit with him.
In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, the family suggests donations to
the Hospice association of your choice or the American Cancer Society.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
