Fred L. Churchman's Obituary
Fred L. Churchman, 90, of Baton Rouge, LA, passed from this life on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at the Guesthouse Care Center in Baton Rouge. Fred was born on January 2, 1933 in Tribune, Kansas to his parents Joe L. and Hilda C. Woodard Churchman.
Visitation will begin Sunday, December 17, 2023, from 1:00 PM until the time of the service which begins at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Labby Memorial in DeRidder, LA. Interment will follow in the Lewis Cemetery in DeRidder, LA. Funeral arrangements under the care and direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder.
Fred was born in Tribune, Kansas Jan. 2, 1933. He served maintaining generators for missile silos in Colorado during the time of the Korean Conflict. He attended community college in Colorado Springs, Colorado studying Industrial Education. Fred was a skilled metal fabricator, later working as a welding instructor in a vo-tech school in Baton Rouge for 20 years.
He met Nova Jean Glasgow in 1964 and was married in 1965. Nova and Fred had 2 sons – Max Churchman and Scott Churchman. He was a great father and provider for his family.
Fred was an inventor and held 17 patents – from a patent on an amusement park ride, the spiraling monorail to several toy patents. He was instrumental in founding the L.A.I.T. (Louisiana Alliance of Innovators in Technology). He also held office in the National American Welding Society (AWS).
Fred enjoyed married life with Nova for 59 wonderful years. He will be greatly and dearly missed by his precious wife and wonderful sons, grandchildren, and all who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish Fred’s memory is his loving wife of 59 years, Nova Churchman of Baton Rouge; two sons, Max Churchman of Baton Rouge, and Scott Churchman and wife Claire of Katy, TX; three grandchildren, Julia Churchman of Baton Rouge, Ryan Churchman of Baton Rouge, and Bradley Churchman of Katy, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, Joe L. and Hilda Churchman; four brothers, Joe Churchman, Clarence Churchman, Lee Churchman, and Carl Churchman; sisters, Treva “Pat” Perry and Agnes Churchman; one niece, Janet Churchman; three nephews, Bill Churchman, Greg Langlois, and Mike Wagner; niece, Janet Churchman.
Serving as pallbearers are Ryan Churchman, Bradley Churchman, Perry Hill, Dr. Richard Churchman, DDS, Dr. Carl Churchman, Jr., DDS and Dr. Paul Perry, DDS.
