Our mother, Eunice Mae Koehn Schmidt, was born to David W. and Ida Koehn on September 23, 1935, in rural Lone Tree Township, Kansas.
Mom died suddenly in her little home in DeRidder, LA on February 15, 2022, reaching the age of eighty-six years.
Mom talked about walking to a one room school close to Galva, Kansas. As she grew older, she helped her dad when he went to cull chickens. Mom had a happy and secure childhood. Mom answered the call of God and was baptized on December 1, 1947 and remained faithful till the Lord called her home.
Dad, Earvy, was one of the men her dad hired. A spark ignited and love was born, they were married on July 10, 1955, by Min. Arverd Wiggers at Lone Tree, KS.
Our parents’ love for each other was displayed in the care and respect for each other and us eight children. Mom loved each of us equally. She was very concerned about our spiritual welfare.
Dad and mom moved from Hesston, Kansas to Louisiana in 1975 to farm. In 2014 they moved off the farm and to a little house on their daughter Geneva and Don’s yard. Geneva tenderly cared for Mom in her failing years with help from us siblings.
Mom was very lonesome when Dad passed away on July 6, 2017. Mom filled her time with reading the Bible and The Messenger of Truth. Her love reached out to her friends, neighbors, and acquaintances by showing her concern for them.
Left to cherish fond memories are; three sons: Galen and wife Ella, Verle and wife Sharla, both of DeRidder, Louisiana, Harold and wife Lou, of Ringwood, Oklahoma; five daughters: Rita and husband Joe Gonzalez, Geneva and husband Donald Smith, Elaine and husband Norman Schmidt, all of DeRidder, Louisiana, Glenda and husband Tony May of McIntire, Iowa, Verna and husband Wendell Koehn of Stover, Missouri, twenty-seven grandchildren, and twenty-five great grandchildren; one brother: Gladwin and Wanda Koehn; one sister: Neoma and Lee Herbert; three sisters -in-law: Rosella and Jim Loewen, Regean Schmidt, Virginia Koehn.
