Ernest R Gilbert's Obituary
Ernest R. Gilbert, a longtime resident of Leesville passed away at his home on February 18, 2019.
He was born in Hardwick, Vermont on October 1, 1931, the son of Cordelia & Ernest W. Gilbert.
After joining the Army, he traveled overseas and eventually was stationed at Ft. Polk. He retired in 1970 and decided to stay in Leesville, as he loved fishing and hunting. After retirement from the Army, he worked at Boise Southern Mill in Security, The Leesville State School as a Cottage parent and the City of Leesville in Ordinances. During his later years, Mr. Gilbert pursued his hunting passion and Pepper Sauce, which he made fresh from his garden. He loved planting a garden and raising chickens and pigs. He enjoyed sharing his cooking expertise and his famous pepper sauce with all his friends at the American Legion and VFW in the Leesville and New Llano area.
Visitation will be Sunday, February 24th from 4pm – 8pm at Labby Memorial Funeral Home, 601 S. Fourth Street, Leesville. On Monday, February 25th, friends are invited to meet at Labby Memorial Funeral Home at 11:00am. The Memorial Service will be held at the Veterans Cemetery at 12:00pm.
Mr. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Chong Gilbert, his brothers, Lloyd Gilbert (wife Sandy) of Milton, Vt. Gordy Gilbert (wife Peggy) of Burlington, Vermont. His children, Raymond Gilbert of Anchorage, Alaska. Judy Blanchard (husband Jeff) of Irving, CA., Beverly Chance (husband Keith) of Leesville, La and Joyce Whitfield (husband Jason) of Baton Rouge, LA. Grandchildren: Carly Blanchard of Santa Cruz, CA., Raymond T. Gilbert of Monroe, LA, Jessica Gilbert of Antiqua Islands, Annabeth Rawls of Monroe, La., Jameson Whitfield of Baton Rouge, LA and a host of nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
Mr. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Cordelia and Ernest W. Gilbert, his sisters, Roberta (husband Donald LaCroix) & Mae (husband Joe) Riley and brother, Lee (wife, Nancy) Gilbert.
