I worked for Col Poe at the Recruiting Command, which was then at Fort Sheridan. He was a kind person and a wonderful resource for younger soldiers. I think of him often and was sorry to see that he had left this world. He was my boss and superior officer, but also a good friend to me and to my family.

He was fearless in the face of the daily probability of disaster.I will always remember those times fondly.Charlie is at rest at Fiddler's Green with Stan Hudson, who was with him when he was shot down for the last time, and other Troopers.Keep a spot for us, Charlie, we'll all be along in a bit.Fred

Mackie and the Poe Family,It was a sad time when I read the obituary notice for Charles. Today, I read the complete obituary and I absolutely agree with the character description of Charles. The family must be very proud of all he did with enthusiasm, dedication, ethics and a desire to make life better for the residents of DeRidder. Mackie:My sincerest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of our Captain. When I hear the name Poe, I always think of Captain Poe and then . sometimes of Edgar Allen.Both were in the army, but only one was a hero to the men he led and gallantly put himself in harm's way for the safety of D Troop, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry and any other soldier in a tight spot. As you know, Charlie courageously did just that on Mother's Day 1969 volunteering to land his slick as a Medivac.
