Bobby, or “Papa Bob” as he was affectionately known, was born on April 23, 1932 in Carbon Hill, Alabama. He passed from this life to his eternal home in Heaven on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 in Alexandria.
Papa Bob served his country in the United States Army and retired with the rank of Master Sergeant. The day after retirement from the Army he went to work for the Education Center at Fort Polk and spent the next 20 years there. Upon his retirement from the Education Center he began his true life’s calling as a volunteer at his church, East Leesville Baptist. Papa Bob was a man who truly had a servant’s heart. He spent every morning preparing coffee and opening up the church for the day. He was known by all of the children as the candy man cause he always had candy in his pockets. One of his favorite things to do was to set up every Thursday for his chicken foot ladies to play dominoes. Papa Bob was a wonderful and caring servant of God who will be deeply missed.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents: John B. & Josie Ashmore Nelson; His wife: Annie Lee Cook Nelson; His Step Brothers: Calton “Cowboy” Nelson, and George Holcomb; His Daughter in law: Li Nelson.
Left to cherish his memory are his Two Sons: Michael Nelson of Las Vegas, NV, and Timothy (Fredia) Nelson of Anacoco, LA; His Grandchildren: Rob (Katherine) Nelson of Las Vegas, NV, Aimee Fernandez of Las Vegas, NV, Dana Zimmerman of Anacoco, LA, Christina Nelson of Leesville, LA, Timothy Nelson Jr. of Leesville, LA. 7 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild; Two Sisters: Tommy Lou Beverly of Atlanta, GA, and Carolyn Herron of Huntsville, AL; One Sister in law: Doris “Dot” Holcomb of Columbia, LA.
