Funeral services for Benton R. Blakeney, 72, of DeRidder, LA will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, September 22, 2014, at Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder with Rev. Lindsay Burns officiating.
Burial will follow in Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, LA under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder, LA. Benton passed from this life on Thursday, September 18, 2014, in DeRidder, LA.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 22, 2014, 10:00 AM until the time of the service at funeral home in DeRidder.
Benton was born on Friday, June 12, 1942, to Jesse and Estelle Lowery Blakeney in Smith County, MS. He graduated from Taylorsville, MS in 1961, joined the United States Army and served in Korea. He was stationed in El Paso where he met his wife Betty and they married in 1969. They moved to Laurel, MS where he worked at Masonite Corporation, later moved to Snowflake, Arizona and worked for Southwest Paper Mill. In 1981, they moved to DeRidder to work for Boise where he retired after many years of service. Benton started his own company, B&B safety of North America and also owned various businesses throughout Beauregard Parish. He was a member of the Shriner’s, Mason’s, and a strong supporter of the Wounded Warrior’s and many other national and local charities. Benton was the 1st person to join the new First Baptist Church in DeRidder where he was a member. He had many close friends who visited him and stuck by him over the last several years which meant so much to him.
He is survived by 1 daughter, Christy Anderson and husband Ed of Baton Rouge, LA; 2 brothers, Kenny Blakeney and wife Jerolyn of Taylorsville, MS and Tommy Blakeney and wife Brenda of Canton, MS; 1 sister, Evelyn Sykes and husband W.L. of Raleigh, MS; 1 granddaughter, Mary Helen Anderson of Baton Rouge, LA and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Betty Warren Blakeney.
