Funeral services for Arna Lee “A L“ Harper, 83 , of Woodville, TX, and formerly of Sugartown, LA, will be held at 10 A.M., Wednesday, September , 17, 2014, in Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in DeRidder, LA, with Rev. Frank Ott and Rev. Nay Vickers officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery in Dry Creek, LA, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder. “A L” passed away Saturday, September 13, 2014, in Tyler County Hospital in Woodville, TX. Visitation will be from 5 P.M. until 9 P.M. Tuesday, September 16, 2014, and Wednesday, September 17, 2014, in Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery in Dry Creek, LA.
“A L’ was born on September 11, 1931, in Sugartown, LA, to Albert Washington and Ina Elizabeth McFatter Harper and continued to live there until twenty-seven years ago when he moved to Woodville. He was a retired Tour Foreman at Calcasieu Paper Company in Elizabeth, LA. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving on the USS Burton Island. He loved to fish and raise cattle, and he was “One Hell of a Man.”
He is survived by two sons, Wade Harper and wife Donna of Lake Charles, LA, and Glenn Harper of Sugartown, LA; daughter, Leisha Best and husband Jerry of Jefferson, TX; step-son Gary Brown of TN; sister Marie England and husband “Buddy” of DeRidder, LA; sister-in-law, Billie Harper of Sugartown, LA; brother-in-law, Herbert Smith of Lake Charles, LA; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley Hill Harper; brother, Jame H. Harper and wife Peggy Cooper Harper; sister, Sylvia Smith and 2 brothers-in-law, Charles Vore and Lem England.
