Agnes Catherine Lewis Hooper's Obituary
Agnes Catherine Lewis Hooper, 98, of DeRidder, LA, died April 14, 2011, while receiving hospice care at DeRidder Retirement and Rehabilitation Center in DeRidder, LA. She was 98 years old.
Born in DeRidder in 1912, she married L.S. “Buck” Hooper in 1929. To honor their respective graduations from DeRidder High School and Leesville High School, and to deepen the rivalry between the schools’ football teams, they founded the Hooper Trophy.
In the spring of 1928, Agnes competed against five other finalists and won the state-level high school debate about whether or not a twelfth grade should be added to the standard eleven grades. Agnes was district president of the American Legion Auxiliary in the 1945-1946 service year. She served as president of the PTA at Louisiana Avenue Elementary School in Shreveport in the 1930s. Agnes was employed as a proofreader for the Louisiana State legislature.
Agnes is survived by her brother, E.N. “Nathan” Lewis, Jr., of DeRidder. She is preceded in death by: her parents, Thomas J. Carroll and Mary Ann Eaves Carroll; sister, Maurine Lewis Poynter; sister, Mary Lewis Foreman; husband, L.S. “Buck” Hooper; son, L.S. Hooper, Jr.; and daughter, Catherine Hooper.
Visitation is 1-2PM, followed immediately by a 2PM memorial service, Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder. Burial will be at Leesville Cemetery under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home.
